Greetings, fellow ASCE members. For the past several years, the Syracuse Section of ASCE has sponsored a booth at the New York State Fair. Since this event draws people from all over the state, we would like to extend an invitation to the members of the Mohawk Section to join us this year. If you would like to attend the Fair this year, please consider volunteering for a shift over the Labor day weekend. Given the impending shortage of engineers in the U.S., our primary goal is to explain to the next generation what we do. We hope to get them excited about civil engineering and encourage them to keep up with their math and science classes. Volunteers should be willing to discuss some of their experiences and share why you chose to practice civil engineering. To help describe some of the projects we work on, we will have a model civilization with an intricate Geotrax train setup. We’ll also have project photos, posters, and promotional giveaways to grab interest. You are invited to bring any photos or toys you think might be of interest to the general public. Students, college faculty, and professionals are invited to participate; the more variety, the better. Last year, we improved our model civilization by adding a circulating water system to our model civilization. This year we are adding a small activated carbon filter for some hands-on training. In addition, we are working on displaying the winning entry in the 2009 National Steel Bridge competition which was designed and built by the students at SUNY Potsdam. The booth will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Labor Day weekend from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. We provide free tickets to the Fair. If you are coming with your family, I can probably provide some additional tickets depending upon demand. Volunteers are also given T-shirts.
